Take a Word - Birdlife

These are North American Whooping Cranes.   They have an interesting story.  In the early 1980's they were nearly extinct, with only 15 birds remaining.  Wildlife conservationists devised a most unusual project to introduce a new migrating population of the endangered species from Wisconsin to safe nesting grounds in Florida.  The chicks were taught to fly, led by a surrogate parent,-- an ultralight plane, and they flew successfully to their new nesting grounds.   The project has been successful, and  there have since been 10 successful flights and the population has grown to 570.   If you are interested in reading about this fascinating project, see here    http://www.whoopingcrane.com/WCCA_report/?p=281

  2. What a great and inspiring story! It almost sounds like something out of science fiction but to know that it is real and the result is the resurgence of an endangered species is mind-boggling. Bev, you are a legend. Not only beautiful artwork but a fantastic story as well. Take a bow.

  14. I have just been to Marie's blog and was surprised to see what seemed to be a crayon and pastel piece of art there, and now here I am looking at your bird life, which for all the world, looks as though it is made from fabric : with a velvety background and corded framing. Nothing less than exquisite Bev!

A very interesting and inspiring story for the survival of the Whooping Cranes too.
