Three Muses - School Days

I attended a one-room country school, grades 1 through 8, at a time when they were fading from the scene.   I have fond memories of those days, and Mr. Zehr, our teacher for 7 of those years, who somehow managed all subjects in all grades while being coach and playground supervisor, drama teacher for our holiday programs, and pianist for our morning renditions of America the Beautiful or other patriotic songs.   I owe him for my love of the written word, and for reinforcing the morals and values of my parents.   He was a great influence in the lives of those of us who attended Columbia School, Livingston County, Illinois in those days of long ago.   This collage, elements from Flickr Collage Images, is a tribute to those days.  Thanks for stopping by.

  1. Bev, this is a wonderful collage that captures your one-room school experiences and memories well! I'm fascinated that you attended such a school- I went to regular old boring schools :).

  2. What a wonderful childhood you must have had Bev I think it shows in your artwork it is always gentle and touching. Things in the schools are so very different now a days it's no wonder kids don't learn what they should. It was a real shocker a few years ago when I went to work as a P.T./O.T. for the school district.

Your collage is like a trip though time...lovely!

  5. Wow Bev, beautiful imagery ( never seen grading like that)- a really stunning trip to the past. It is amazing how teachers often taught many different classes and played many rolls in the lives of students . Love this inspiration!

  6. Lovely collage, Bev. I have never known anyone who attended a one room school. I thought our school was unique with 2 classes in every room except for 7th and 8th which had individual teachers. Thanks for a wonderful walk down memory lane as I think on those good ole days. Your teacher was an exemplary instructor, probably paid far less than he was worth.

  7. The school just around the corner was a 2 room school when I moved here 25 years ago, now 5 rooms due to the farm land being cut up into small blocks - more families. Lovely memories of your schooldays, Bev, thanks for sharing!

  16. Bev, I love your collage. Thanks for sharing those memories! I attended twelve different schools in three countries, and in three languages. None were one-room schoolhouses, but I do remember when girls wore dresses ALL the time. I also remember the year we girls all over the US rebelled over that very strict rule and started wearing trousers in protest. I think once they put a man on the moon, they couldn't keep us girls in skirts anymore.

  18. There are many old one room schools around here in Pennsylvania...I am fortunate to live in an area with many buildings still standing for over 300 years. Many of the school buildings have been used for other purposed, some are no longer usuable, but I have always wondered what it would have been like to attend one. I love your story and your college. Very touching.
