Sunday Postcard - Hats

Straw hats were a must in the Illinois summers. In this rather fuzzy old photo (sorry about that!), my friend, Kenly, and I are on the way to the field with thermoses of cold water from the well in the front yard, taking a much-needed drink to the men who were baling hay. Our make-shift wagon is pulled by his trusty old mule, Kate. In the background is the one-room school we attended, Grades 1 through 8, before we went to the high school in town (population 650) where our class of 36 was the largest ever to graduate. There would have been a small flag with a blue star in the window of our house, as my brother was in the Army and WW-II was not yet ended. (Click on the photo for enlarged view).

  1. I haven't seen this photo before but what a treasure it is. I hope everyone who makes a comment will read your journaling which is always so brilliant. You can evoke times past more touchingly than anyone I know. Great take on the hat challenge!
